Unfortunately, moving is ranked as one of the most stressful activities and can also be one of the most wasteful. However, there are small changes you can make to cut down on both the intensity and the inefficiency of moving.

1. Downsize by Donation

As you begin packing, you will no doubt come across things you simply don’t want to bring with you to your new home. Canned food can be heavy and bulky to move, but that doesn’t mean it should be waste. A quick trip to your local food bank will free up space in your boxes and be a blessing to neighbors in need.

Similarly, moving is a great opportunity to reassess your wardrobe. Save yourself the trouble of packing and unpacking clothes you never wear by donating them to the secondhand store you prefer. Should you decide to donate more than clothes, many donation centers will pick up larger furniture directly from your home.

2. Pack without Paper

Cardboard boxes and paper or plastic packing wrap are typically synonymous with moving. However, there are alternatives that are much better for the environment.

Instead of wrapping dishes and other fragile items in bubble wrap or packing paper that will end up in a landfill, try dishtowels and blankets. They’re coming with you anyway, so why not put them to work? Dresser drawers or large, reusable bins are also good alternatives to boxes, and you can use them for storage later on.

3. Clean without Using Harmful Chemicals

Whether coming or going, you’re likely to do quite a bit of cleaning during a move. Harsh cleaners are no better for your health than they are for the environment. Protect yourself and your planet by opting for more natural products.
